No. 31 - Chris Thorburn

NAME: Chris Thorburn
NHL/AHL: Rochester Americans
POSITION: Right Wing (RW)
HT: 6-3
WT:  220
BIRTHDATE: June 3, 1983
BIRTHPLACE: Sault Saint Marie, ONT
SHOOTS: Right

If a first impression lasts a lifetime. Rochester forward Chris Thorburn’s recent early-season call up to the Americans' parent club in Buffalo, may have opened the door to the Sabres locker room in the not-too-distant future.

In just his second career game in the NHL, Thorburn came up just shy of recording an impressive Gordie Howe hat trick.

Three minutes into Buffalo's 6-4 win over Colorado, the burly right winger picked up an assist on linemate Paul Gaustad's goal, and a mere two seconds later squared off with Avalanche forward Cody McCormick for a spirited scrap.

Though he was unable to complete the unique trifecta, Thorburn certainly made an impact on that game, showing the team that selected him 50th overall in the second round of the 2001 draft may see that investment turn into NHL dividends.

That showcase only touched the tip of Thorburn's potential.

"He's become a lot more confident," Amerks coach Randy Cunneyworth said. "The way he carries himself, and the way he works on the ice has evolved. He's strong enough, he's fast enough, he can fight. Now, it's more about learning little tricks."

The 6-3, 220-pounder's combination of size, strength and puck-handling ability makes him a perfect candidate to become a dominant power forward in the NHL. Before he makes the leap, those raw skills need further refining in Rochester.

In his third year as a professional, Thorburn has quickly turned into a more polished player, leading the Americans in scoring as of late February.

"Every day I'm working on my board work and defensive zone coverage," the 22-year-old said. "I'm just trying to use my size and speed to my advantage. When I put that all together, hopefully I can make the next step to the NHL."

Rochester teammate Daniel Paille, who played 14 games with the Sabres during a two-month stint earlier this season, knows Thorburn has all the ingredients to succeed.

"His game has definitely developed," Paille said. "He always had the skill, but now he's more of a complete player. He plays physical every game, has speed, and knows how to handle the puck."

Until the Sabres come calling again, the talented right winger will bide his time patiently in Rochester, perfecting his craft.

"He's picking up more things in order to be more effective," Cunneyworth said. "He's going to have to keep doing that blue-collar work in order to be rewarded. But I know he will keep doing that."
