A native of Windsor, Ont., Wellwood played for Team Canada the 2004 AHL All-Star Classic and made his NHL debut, playing in one game against the Ottawa Senators on January 8th.
In 2004-05, Kyle has continued to generate offense for his squad, tallying 50 points (20 goals, 30 assists) in 46 games, and has ranked among the league’s scoring leaders all season.
On Oct. 30, in the second game of a two-game set against the Cleveland Barons at Mile One Stadium, Wellwood carved his name in the AHL record books by scoring five goals, helping the Maple Leafs to an 8-3 victory.
Wellwood is a superb stickhandler and has shown to be a great set-up man with plenty of raw skill, although his size, smallish by NHL standards at 5'10", and speed have been an points of concern.
Sources tell us that Kyle’s chances of playing regularly in the NHL would be greatly improved if he adds at least 10 pounds of muscle and keeps improving his skating.
Toronto management has said they will give him every opportunity to make the major league Leafs. With the progress he has made this season, expect Wellwood to get a call when the NHL resumes play.
He debuts on the FAB50 at No. 26
