Four Teams Remain Undefeated in ECHL.
Northeast Division leads the way with two perfect teams.

Jonathan Roybal

10.25.01 - Three teams are emerging as powerhouses in the Northeast Division of the ECHL. The Trenton Titans and the Roanoke Express remain unbeaten, while the Richmond Renegades have suffered only a single defeat. These three teams rank among the top six ECHL teams in standing points for the season.

Going for the Record

The Titans are a perfect 6-0-0 after two weeks. They're winning by being stingy at the net, giving up a paltry 1.67 goals per game, fewest in the league.

RW Cail MacLean is providing the offense, scoring a point in each of Trenton's first six games. He has four goals and two assists on the season.

Trenton needs two more wins to tie the ECHL record for the best season start, set by the 1994-95 Dayton Bombers with 8 straight victories. They'll get their opportunity this weekend, but it's not going to be easy.

On Thursday, the Titans travel to Greenville to take on the Grrowl. Greenville, who brings in a 3-2-1 record into the contest, is 3-1-0 all-time against Trenton.

If the Titans can pull that game out, they will play for the record against a tough 4-2-0 Columbia Cottonmouths team on Friday.

In a rematch of the 2001 Kelly Cup, the Titans will face-off against the 2-2-1 South Carolina Stingrays on Saturday. All three games will be on the road.

Surviving a Tough Stretch, Still Undefeated

This past week the Roanoke Express played four games in five nights. They remained unbeaten, going 3-0-1 on that stretch, upping their overall record to 5-0-1.

The Express have the ECHL's leading scorer in center Mike Omicioli. Omicioli [oh-mi -chel-ee] has 11 points on 5 goals and 6 assists, one in each game.

Center Vern Fiddler and veteran RW Rick Kowalsky are tied for second on the team with 7 points. Fiddler has five goals and two assists, while Kowalsky has registered three goals and four assists.

Team Captain Mike Peron scored the game-winning goal with 3:15 left in last Friday's 3-2 victory over Greenville.

Roanoke plays two road games this weekend. On Friday they'll be in Charlotte to face the 1-4-1 Checkers. Then they travel to Wheeling to take on the 2-2-0 Nailers on Saturday

Lighting the Lamp

Though no longer unbeaten, Richmond, with a 4-1-0 record, is on fire.

They are leading the ECHL with an average of 4.20 goals per game.

The Renegades have scored 16 goals in their last three games, lead by ECHL player of the week Garret Prosofsky. The red-hot rookie center had 5 goals and one assist in those three games, registering the first and only hat trick of the 2001-02 season.

Also playing outstanding for the Renegades is Rod Taylor, the ECHL's all time leading goal scorer. Taylor has recorded 7 points and has scored in all five games this season.

Parity at its Best

Although the Northeast has some great teams, the Southeast has a strong division. Seven out of the eight teams in the division are playing .500 or above.

The Pee Dee Pride sits on top of the division with a 5-2-0 record and have 10 standing points.

In the ECHL, teams get two standing points for a win, one point for a tie.

The Macon Whoopee are undefeated with a 4-0-1 record, but only rank 2nd in the division with nine points.

This weekend, Macon will have a chance to take the lead with three games on tap.

They are at home for a Thursday night game against the South Carolina Stingrays. The Whoopee then face-off Friday at Greenville before heading back home Sunday to take on the Augusta Lynx.

Pee Dee has two road games this week. Unfortunately for the Pride, both opponets have yet to lose at home this year.

On Saturday, Pee Dee will face the Charlotte Checkers, then head down to South Carolina to take on the Stingrays in a Tuesday night affair.

Best-of-three

The other unbeaten team resides in the Southwest Division.

The Louisiana Ice Gators are standing 4-0-1 after five games. The Ice Gators will take-on the Jackson Bandits for the third straight game this Friday.

Louisiana was shutout at home for only the 3rd time in history, suffering a 1-0 shootout loss to Jackson on Wednesday, October 17.

The Ice Gators got their revenge by beating the Bandits at home 5-2 the following Saturday. Friday night's contest will be played in Jackson, MS.

Strong Netminding Gives Edge in West

Based on team records, the Northwest is the weakest division after two weeks. The only team with a winning record is the Cincinnati Cyclones.

The former IHL club is on top of the division with a 3-1-0 record. They have one of the ECHL's best goalies in Steve Briere. He has 2 wins in 2 games, one of them a shut out. Briere has registered 68 saves, allowed only 2 goals, to give him a .971 save percentage, good enough for 2nd in the ECHL.
