Records
are meant to be broken.
Odessa goalie Mike Gorman, and two other teams are targeting CHL records.
The Odessa Jackalope's, and their man between the pipes are enjoying a tremendous season. Goalie Mike Gorman is leading the CHL in four major goaltending categories, wins, shutouts, best save percentage, and best goals against average in a season.
Gorman's 23 wins is tops in the CHL, and with 19 games remaining, Gorman only needs 13 more wins to tie Derek Puppa's record total of 39, set in the 1998-1999 season with Huntsville.
In the shutout category, Gorman needs three 'bagels' to tie former Jackalope Grant Sjerven's total of eight, set last season.
If the season ended today one of the records that Gorman is targeting for would belong to him. His .938 save percentage lies just above Ken Carroll's .935 percentage, set last season with Bossier-Shreveport. The 1.95 goals against average he is sporting trails Carroll's 1.89 record also set last season.
The 22-year old Gorman, from Nepean. Ontario, entered this season facing the pressure of replacing Sjerven, who enjoyed an dazzling 2000-2001 campaign under Coach Don McKee's defense oriented system.
To say he has responded to the challenge would be an understatement. Gorman has earned CHL Goaltender of the Month honors for both October, and December, and will most likely to capture the honor for a third time in January.
While being named to the Southern Conference's starting lineup at last week's All-Star Game Gorman has his career, and his team's season in perspective. "All I wanted to do is have a consistent year," said Gorman. "That's all I want. I'm not worried about shutouts or stats. Winning is what counts".
With the post-season rapidly approaching, Gorman will certainly be called on to continue his dominant play for the Odessa's defensive system. "All this is just a warm-up for the playoffs, and that's when the real players come to play," said Gorman. "Everyone loves to play on a team like ours. High-scoring teams are nice, but come the playoffs, you have to play defense."
Aside from Gorman's heroics, one other significant Central Hockey League record could be broken this season. Through 45 games, the Tulsa Oilers have posted a penalty killing percentage of 89.7, allowing just 19 power play goals against.
The current record stands at 88.4, established by the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs last season on their way to a third straight WPHL title. Odessa also is within striking distance of the mark with an 88.3 percentage.
