Cleveland Right Wing Jonathan Cheechoo named AHL

Cleveland – 12.17.01 - Right Wing Jonathan Cheechoo of the Cleveland Barons has been named the AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, December 16, 2001.
In three games last week, Cheechoo recorded two goals and five assists for seven points, along with a plus-4 rating.
His offensive push helped the Barons maintained their hold on first place in the Central Division, with a record of 16-11-2-2, 36 points.
Cheechoo scored twice and added an assist in Cleveland's 5-2 victory over Eastern Conference-leading Hamilton on Tuesday evening. He then added two assists each in Friday's 6-2 win at Rochester and Saturday's 3-3 tie at Syracuse.
Jonathan ranks second on the Barons with 31 points on 14 goals and 17 assists. Those numbers are even more impressive considering Cheechoo has only played in just 24 contests due to a back injury.
He made his way back into the lineup on Dec. 5, and in six games, he has registered six goals and eight assists for 14 points.
Drafted by San Jose in the second round of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, the 21-year-old has recorded 46 goals and 51 assists in 99 career AHL contests.
A native of Moose Factory, Ont., Cheechoo participated in the 2001 First Union AHL All-Star Classic and was named to the 2001 AHL All-Rookie Team.
As a rookie, Jonathan was tied for the second on the team in goals and once scored 16 points in 11 games.
