Perhaps all that Ryan Church needed was a change of scenery.

After a trade from the Cleveland Indians to the Montreal Expos organization earlier this year, Church has rebounded from a poor 2003 in which he missed most of the month of July with a left thumb contusion.

This season, his .380 batting average led the Pacific Coast League [PCL] as of June 13, and he has displayed some power by hitting 10 homers and 40 RBI for the Edmonton Trappers. He ranks 2nd in the league in on base percentage (.457) and 3rd in slugging (.666).

“Ryan brings all the tools to the ballpark,” Trappers Manager Dave Huppert tells MLN. “He has been outstanding. He’s our RBI guy and a great power hitting right-fielder.”

Besides the heavy lumber that Ryan swings, one of his biggest assets is his defense.

“He can play all three positions in the outfield,” says Huppert. “He does a great job, gets good jumps, good routes and has a plus arm.”

Church was recently named to the 2003 Pacific Coast League (PCL) All-Stars.

The skipper also praises the way Church works very hard at the game, calling him a good teammate and very energetic. Huppert also believes that Ryan will be a contributor to the Expos when he gets the call.

“Once he gets his feet on the ground he’ll be a big asset to that ballclub,” says the skipper.

He's an asset to the FAB50, where he debuts at lucky number seven.
