An impressive switch hitter, Melky has given the Yankees more than they could have asked for this year. He is posting above average numbers in Tampa right now, going .318 in 66 at bats during his time there so far. Not on fire, but starting what many in the Yankees organization would like to see as a long burn.
Cabrera, 19, will turn 20 this August. Not too old to make it up to the higher levels. He will have to play up to the level that he is playing or better to make it past AA. Current thinking is that he has the drive to carry himself there. He might do a whole lot better in a system that will cultivate his style of player. The Yankees typically want the butter without churning the cream much.
Still, the coaching staff in Tampa is used to George's ways, and knows that these kids have to be in prime grade A shape when the "player to be named" nod comes a-calling. They will give him a lot of good seasoning at the T-Yanks.
There are a lot of teams that could use a player like Cabrera. We hope that he finds one that can help him turn on that extra after-burner to jet him into the majors.
