He had 71 strikeouts compared to 25 walks, an ERA of 3.55, and allowed 75 hits in 71 innings pitched.
In 2004, Matt received a promotion to the South Bend Silver Hawks. He is 8-3 in the Midwest League with a 2.28 ERA and a 79-22 strikeout to walk ratio in 75 innings pitched.
His Midwest League performance is good enough to move him up by next season to the AA. Opinion seems to be more mixed as to whether he will make a short or long visit to that level. He faces better batters and his record and his ERA continue to improve. He is, by all accounts, a serious competitor who has Major Attitude. Still, the AA and the AAA are quantum leaps from Yakima and South Bend.
Guys with ERAs hovering around 1.00 at that level show fast track. With a 2 and up you're a solid citizen with bright prospects, as long as you take a bite out of the next class of ball and it doesn't bite back.
We'll split the difference, and say that, unless his post season (Fall League or other winter ball) causes some further advances in the thinking of those with whom we spoke this summer, we won't be seeing him at Tucson until the tail-end of 2006 or spring 2007.
