Minnesota’s finest are all home-made: Scott Baker, Kevin Slowey, Nick Blackburn and Glen Perkins are all products of the Twins’ farm system, which is clicking on all cylinders again in 2009.
“That is why it is hard to sign six-year free agent pitchers,’’ Twins farm director Jim Rantz says. “They see all the young talent we have in the majors. It’s hard to blame them.”
Minnesota has mixed in more hitters with their usual crop of pitchers in recent years. The Twins are loaded with fielding talent, particularly in the deep grass so young and raw that “The Kids Are All Right” should be their theme song.
“At the time of the draft, we go with the best players on the board,’’ Rantz said. “We’re going to be one of the youngest teams at every level, but we feel we’ve paved the way for our future.”
