Fresh off a $130 million dollar last place finish in the American League Central in 2008, the Detroit Tigers jettisoned the aging Pudge Rodriguez, Edgar Renteria, Todd Jones and Gary Sheffield.
With four regulars and one starter off at the WBC, rookie hurlers Ryan Perry and Rick Porcello, first round picks from the last two drafts, forced their way onto the Opening Day roster. Perry allowed just one earned run in 11 relief appearances. Porcello showed plus stuff and uncommon poise for a 20-year-old as he logged a 2.30 ERA en route to landing a spot in the major league rotation.
Jeff Larish showed his versatility with quality innings at third base to go with a .246 average to earn a left-handed swinging spot on Leyland’s bench. Newly-acquired fly catcher Josh Anderson will bring speed, defense and a steady left-handed bat off the bench in backing up all three outfield spots for the Tigers as Leyland looks to rotate his star players in-and-out of the DH spot in order to give them a breather.
