BLIP. The prospect radar in the Minnesota Twins organization is lighting up this spring with Anthony Swarzak, a 6-4, 200 lb. right-handed pitcher. This bogey out of Beloit developed professional name value when he made the Midwest League All-Star roster in 2005. To fans in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, it was only a matter of time.
A standout at Nova High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Swarzak played a little third base but predominately spent his time on the mound for one of the nation’s best prep programs, gaining All-America status twice. Swarzak’s mental makeup and intangibles are more advanced than many 19-year-olds
Maturity was a key factor in the Minnesota Twins decision to draft him as the 61st player overall in the in the second round of the 2004 June free agent draft.
He was arguably the best prospect out of a pack of five first-round picks that year, including Swarzak’s Beloit Snappers teammates Jay Rainville, Steven Waldrop and Trevor Plouffe if his numbers against competition in the Class A Midwest League last season are any indication.
The Twins put him into 20 innings of instructional action following the 2004 draft, and then promoted him to the Gulf Coast League Fort Myers Miracle, where he compiled a 5-2 record in 48 innings.
